Description
One lady's 2 piece dress with belt. Ribbed silk taffeta, purple and black. Hand sewn. A- Skirt and jacket ensemble, attached at back waist. Skirt longer at back and pleated into buckram waistband. Jacket buttons in front but buttons are missing. Sleeves have wide black lace at bottom. B - Overskirt has shorter front with matching black lace trim and skirt back is pleated. - Plain belt fastened with hook and eye. c. 1880's

Mauveine, also known as aniline purple and Perkin's mauve, was one of the first synthetic dyes.It was discovered accidentally by William Henry Perkin in 1856 while he was attempting to synthesise the phytochemical quinine for the treatment of malaria. It is also among the first chemical dyes to have been mass-produced.
